Power Generation & Water Middle East 2008 Events

A Middle East Electricity Event

Innovation and investment is once more on the agenda as several GCC countries consider "Seawater Greenhouses" to provide water for agriculture.

The process uses seawater to cool and humidify the air that ventilates the greenhouse and sunlight to distill fresh water from seawater. At approximately US$ 118m for a 1 hectare site of greenhouses and a 10MW concentrated power farm, this approach could become a low cost, sustainable method of desalination.

The largest vacuum sewerage system in the world is to be implemented in the UAE, on the Palm Jumeirah, it was announced this week. It will deliver waste water to a membrane bio-reactor system sewerage treatment plant located on the trunk of the Palm and the resulting safe water will be used to irrigate landscaping - reducing the demand for desalinated water.

Investment in water projects in the UAE has increased by 20% from US $11.62 billion in 2007 to US $14bn in 2008. There are currently 55 on-going projects - a figure which is expected to rise due to the growing population and sustained economic activities. Abu Dhabi has earmarked US$1.3 billion for the expansion of its existing 5 desalination plants while a further 5 plants are expected to be complete by 2010.
